Traffic Bridges

Alphen aan den Rijn | N231a

  • Length: 34m
  • Width: 3.5m
  • Class: 5kN/m2 + service vehicle
  • Construction year: 2019

Maintenance of the infrastructure usually causes a lot of inconvenience for local residents and road users. Long closures ensure high (economic) costs and a heavy burden on the alternative routes. This was recently a challenge for KWS and Van Hattem and Blankevoort during the major maintenance of the N231a near Alphen aan den Rijn – an assignment from the Province of South Holland – where the road had to be completely closed off. Partly by making use of various prefab elements, including a 34-meter-long prefab FRP bicycle bridge, they were able to get the job done in just 3 weeks.

This FRP bicycle bridge was supplied by FiberCore Europe, where the bridge was prefabricated in its own factory. The complete bridge, including railing and coverings, was supplied by special transport by road. Due to the low own weight and buoyancy, the bridge could be temporarily stored in a nearby water and drifted to the construction site on the day of installation, where two cranes hoisted into the bridge in a few minutes. After this, it was in fact immediately ready for use.

FiberCore Europe prefab FRP bridges are manufactured with the InfraCore® Inside technology and are therefore extremely robust. With a lifespan of more than 100 years and the possibility of relocation, they also offer a sustainable, circular solution. In addition, the bridges are virtually maintenance-free and stupid-proof; provided with an anti-graffiti coating.
